Chris Kessler - Living In A Box

This CD narrative follows a womans mind questioning the basis of the drugs laws.

In an interesting attempt to combat the media and government lies, various drugs are examined in a comical way and disputes between various characters (different aspects of the same womans mind) take place.

Although I am completely in favour of cannabis legalisation, that doesn't mean I am not in favour of legalising other drugs. The issue with Living in a Box is whether you urge for an (eventual) end to all drug prohibition, or whether you feel legalising cannabis alone is enough. Personally I found the attacks on users of drugs other than cannabis a difficult to stomach. If the intention is to make fun of the corporate media lies, then this CD is coming very close to some stereotyping found typically in the corporate media.

Alternatively, its possible I've completely missed the point of the CD - which isn't altogether impossible due to the very American content of this CD. For non-US listeners this CD is definitely going to be a culture shock - from the words used, accents used and even some of the ideas. This isn't a particular problem if you take an interest in the sociology or anthropology of drug use!

This is the sort of CD which you are likely to lend to people to see their reaction. The original and interesting methods employed to get across the argument are pretty amusing. My reaction was favourable as have others, though I did have some reservations about the general strategy being used to highlight the lies and brainwashing powers of the TV. Sales for this CD have been high, and is ranked by High Times as a best seller! Decide for yourselves.
